Pune: The Maharashtra public health department has ordered an enquiry after a high-level review found serious lapses in the supervision of sensitive child health and family planning programmes. Two assistant directors of health services (family welfare) for Pune have been suspended.
Conducted by the principal secretary of the public health department on Oct 12, the officials — one in charge of the child health programme and the other, the family planning programme — did not conduct field visits or effectively do their jobs, according to the review.
Calling the officials’ performance “extremely unsatisfactory”, the department has ordered an inquiry against both for dereliction of duty. The department said it will appoint interim heads of the two programmes soon. During the suspension, the officers will be assigned to the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar general hospital as their headquarters; they cannot to leave the headquarters without prior permission.
