Ubisoft has laid off 70 employees at Ubisoft Singapore, the team that led development on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, barely weeks after the remake crossed 3.5 million sales. The French publisher is also proposing to shut down RedLynx, the Finnish developer behind the Trials motorbike series, a move that would affect up to 52 more jobs. Black Flag Resynced, a modern rebuild of the 2013 pirate adventure, sold 3.5 million copies in its first fortnight, as per Eurogamer. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also reportedly on the way. Ubisoft set up its Singapore studio in 2008 as a support team. It then led Skull and Bones, the seafaring action game that finally shipped in 2024 after multiple delays. RedLynx joined Ubisoft in 2011, riding the success of Trials HD on Xbox Live Arcade. Its last major standalone game was Trials Rising in 2019. Last year, the Helsinki studio cut up to 60 roles and pivoted to mobile games.
“At Ubisoft Singapore, 70 positions have been impacted to align the studio with upcoming production needs,” the company said in a statement shared with Eurogamer. This year alone, Ubisoft has closed studios in Stockholm, Halifax, Winnipeg and Belgrade, and cancelled six games as it regroups its brands into six “Creative Houses”. “We deeply value the contributions of both teams and recognise the impact this may have on our colleagues,” Ubisoft said, adding that it would conduct the process “with care and respect”.
It added that the Singapore office “remains an important part of Ubisoft’s global production organisation. The cuts reportedly make up about a fifth of its total headcount. The timing is hard to miss. Over the years, it built the naval combat that became a calling card of the Assassin’s Creed series. Its closure now has to clear Finland’s mandatory change negotiations. Both cuts are part of a wider overhaul. The company has not spelt out what those upcoming production needs are, or what its Singapore team will work on next. You use AI every day.
