Nagpur: Demanding relief of ₹1 lakh per hectare for farmers before Diwali, Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar said on Wednesday that panchnamas of drought-hit farmland remained incomplete in several districts, including Chandrapur.
“If an engineering college charges ₹1 lakh, where will the farmer pay it from when not a single grain has grown? “Sugar was ₹28 a kg when the MSP was fixed at ₹3,100. Sugar is now sold at ₹55 a kg and the MSP is still ₹3,100. It should be raised to at least ₹5,000.

“The financial aid should be released before Diwali without conditions, else farmers will have no option but to take to the streets in the coming days,” he said. Criticising the govt over concessions in drought-hit areas, Wadettiwar said only examination fees had been waived, while farmers continued to face financial burdens. Issuing a GR like this is a business of fooling farmers,” he said.
On loan recovery, he questioned the govt’s claim that loans had been restructured and that action would be taken against lenders resorting to coercive recovery. He asked what action had actually been initiated and urged farmers to contact him if any lender used coercion, promising to pursue the matter and stand by them. Wadettiwar also backed the farmers’ agitation led by Raju Shetti over sugarcane prices, arguing that the minimum support price (MSP) for sugar had failed to keep pace with market rates. If sugar prices are rising, why not sugarcane prices?” he asked. Download the TOI App.
