Hold talks before shifting from 2-child norm: Cong

TNCC president Manickam Tagore has urged the health department to consult stakeholders before taking a final decision that could indicate a shift from Tamil Nadu’s two-child population policy.

Responding to the govt extending 365 days of maternity leave to govt employees for a third child, Tagore welcomed the benefit but cautioned against reading it as a policy change.

“Tamil Nadu’s family planning initiatives have been a proven success story, and any potential alteration to this policy should be thoroughly discussed in an appropriate forum,” he said. On factionalism within Congress, Tagore said, “There is only one faction — the Rahul Gandhi faction. He also said an alliance was taking shape under TVK’s leadership and discussions would resume after the assembly session on giving it a formal name and structure.

Madurai: TNCC president Manickam Tagore has urged the health department to consult stakeholders before taking a final decision that could indicate a shift from Tamil Nadu’s two-child population policy.

On the fireworks sector, Tagore said 134 factories that had remained closed following inspections were recently allowed to reopen.

On remarks by some ministers projecting chief minister Vijay as a future Prime Minister, Tagore said they need not be taken seriously. “Rahul Gandhi is the face of Congress and the face of the opposition,” he said. On criticism over a Uttar Pradesh firm securing a govt transport outsourcing contract, Tagore said people should be free to work across states. “It is not fair for us to say that Tamil Nadu youth can go elsewhere for jobs but people from other states cannot come here,” he said while stressing that qualified Tamil Nadu youth willing to take up available jobs should be given priority. Officials, factory owners and workers should work together to protect livelihoods while ensuring safety and preventing violations, bribery and corruption, he said.

He added that Vijay was the face of the alliance in Tamil Nadu and Congress had backed his govt.
