Kochi: The high court on Thursday declined to stay the state govt’s order nominating three members to the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) senate.
The petitioners, former senate members, challenged the order issued by the higher education department on Aug 1 nominating Kabeer K K, Anson P Antony and Abbad Lufti A to the Cusat Senate. Accordingly, the bench issued the notices and adjourned the petition to Sept 17. The nominations in the “other members” category were not in accordance with the Cusat (Amendment) Act, 2012, which provides for the nomination of six experts in the field of higher education, of whom one shall be from the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and one shall be a woman, according to the petitioners. The bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, however, issued notice before admission to the respondents, including the state govt and the newly nominated members, on a petition filed by C R Soman of Thiruvananthapuram and K Sreekumar of Kakkanad in Ernakulam.
