Mysuru: Investigation into the death of a tiger caught in a snare on the forest border

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Mysuru: Investigation into the death of a tiger caught in a snare on the forest border in Maddur Range of Bandipur Tiger Reserve has revealed that the cable of an old four-wheeler was used to trap wildlife.

Following the incident, patrolling has been stepped up along the forest borders and combing operations have been launched at vulnerable places.

Bandipur director L Nandish told TOI that soon after the incident came to light, the entire area was combed for similar or other traps and snares, but none was found. Foresters said all key wildlife properties, including claws, teeth and pelt, were intact. It was the only snare set in a small, bushy area along the forest border. Special teams have been formed to identify those who laid the trap. The tiger was found dead early Monday during routine beat work.

It had died days earlier after being caught in the snare, and its body was completely putrefied when the incident came to light.
