Nagpur: A 28-year-old woman, Sheetal Charpe, suffered head injuries and lay in a pool of blood on a busy Jalalkheda road after she was assaulted inside an autorickshaw and tossed off the moving vehicle by his boyfriend, Vikas Kambade late Tuesday, said police.
Kambade, 35, resident of Amravati district, has been arrested for murder. Kambade was arrested and in court, which remanded him in police custody till October 16.
Kambade told police Sheetal had jumped out off the moving vehicle, but statements and other evidence, including clues on alleged threats, pointed to his role. Sheetal was rushed to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The attack followed the accused’s suspicion that his girlfriend had romantic relationships with other men. The incident at Bharsingi on the road linking Naigaon and Jalalkheda initially appeared to be a road accident, possibly a hit-and-run, but police investigations pointed towards Kambade’s role. As per police, Kambade and Sheetal were in a relationship, but frequently quarrelled as he suspected she was cheating on him. Police are investigating whether his suspicion was the immediate trigger for the crime. During the probe, police established that Sheetal had been travelling in Kambade’s autorickshaw when she fell off the vehicle. Investigators suspect an argument broke out between the couple and Kambade allegedly assaulted Sheetal with one hand while driving and pushed her out of the vehicle. The findings prompted police to treat the case as murder rather than an accidental death. The probe was led by Nagpur (rural) superintendent of police Harssh A Poddar, additional SP Anil Mhaske and Jalalkheda asst police inspector Vinod Jambhale. Police are continuing the probe to establish the exact sequence of events that led to Sheetal’s death.
