Delhi govt Thursday launched a project to replace 1 lakh streetlights with smart LED ones

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: Delhi govt Thursday launched a project to replace 1 lakh streetlights with smart LED ones across the capital to improve visibility in dark spots and make roads safer.

Approximately 45,000 high-pressure sodium vapour lamps will be replaced with energy-efficient LEDs. Govt expects the shift to reduce power consumption and generate savings of around Rs 100 crore over five years. Agencies will have to repair reported faults within 48 hours, failing which they will face a penalty of Rs 2,000 per light per day.

Chief minister Rekha Gupta launched the initiative at Andrews Ganj bus stop under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.

PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the new system would strengthen maintenance through real-time monitoring. The project follows concerns raised by women students during an interaction with the chief minister at Delhi University , where they highlighted inadequate street lighting in several areas. A key feature of the project is a central command centre that will monitor the status of each light in real time. Unlike the existing system, which does not provide real-time information on lighting faults, the new arrangement will help officials identify malfunctioning lights and ensure quicker repairs. Each light will also carry a QR code that residents can scan to access information and register complaints. The Public Works Department (PWD) will oversee the system, including monitoring and maintenance. Smart feeder pillars will be installed to improve operational efficiency, while the project will also cover cases of theft and vandalism. Smart scheduling will automatically increase illumination in the evening and reduce it in the morning to conserve electricity.
