Madurai corpn fixing 50 flood-prone spots: The wider industry impact

With even brief spells of rain leaving several streets waterlogged, Madurai Corporation has identified 50 vulnerable locations across the city and proposed ₹2.4 crore worth of works to tackle flooding during the northeast monsoon.

Similar wall-raising and repair initiatives are underway in Ponmeni to safeguard public health,” a senior corporation official said. “These cleaning efforts are aimed at eliminating bottlenecks and streamlining the entire drainage ecosystem for the monsoon,” the official added. Madurai: With the threat of heavy downpours looming during the northeast monsoon, and recurring waterlogging posing severe challenge to daily life, Madurai corporation is undertaking flood preparation in areas where considerably less attention had been paid in the past few months. Elevating these access points ensures that surface water cannot easily infiltrate the sewer network during peak rainfall events, protecting low-lying homes from contamination. “These structural modifications, combined with thorough desilting operations, are being done to ensure that monsoon runoff remains contained within the channels rather than spilling onto roadways. Key interventions under these additional works include culvert arrangements at Ambigai Nagar and Rani Mangammal Street, alongside new UGD pipeline installations in Vilangudi and Parasurampatti.
