Theni braces for heavy rain as IMD issues orange alert
The district administration has identified 43 vulnerable areas, which have been inspected by designated monitoring committee officers. As many as 65 relief shelters equipped with basic facilities have been prepared for people displaced by heavy rain and flooding. Because sudden flash floods are likely in major waterbodies such as the Mullai Periyar, Kottagudi, Varaganathi and Vaigai rivers, adults and children have been strictly warned against bathing or playing near the riverbanks. Because of the risk of sudden surges, the public has also been urged to move livestock to safe locations, avoid dumping garbage into residential drains and stay away from waterfalls.
With tanks, ponds and other waterbodies across the district nearing capacity, authorities have directed multiple departments to prepare for emergencies, including possible flooding. Residents living near riverbanks have been advised to remain vigilant. Communication systems have also been established to alert residents in low-lying areas if dams need to be opened during emergencies.
Madurai: The North-East Monsoon commenced in Theni district on Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.
A 24-hour disaster management control room has been set up at the Theni District Collectorate to receive public complaints and coordinate relief operations. District Collector V Sivakrishnamurthy urged residents to report rain- and flood-related emergencies by calling the toll-free number 1077 or 04546-261093.
