The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

The speech, when viewed in its entirety, “disclosed no cognisable offence”, it said. New Delhi: Delhi Police Thursday submitted that no FIR needed to be filed against chief minister Rekha Gupta over alleged derogatory remarks about Lord Hanuman.

The court listed the matter for Oct 29, after complainant Ramniwas Sharma sought some time to reply. The action-taken report, placed before additional judicial magistrate Ashwani Panwar, said the complaint relied on “selectively quoted portions that distorted the speech’s context”. Sharma has alleged that Gupta made the “derogatory” remarks during an event to inaugurate a new fleet of buses from Delhi to Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, committing an offence under Section 299 of BNS. It said Gupta was praising govt employees’ commitment and performance by comparing their work ethic with Lord Hanuman’s capabilities. The report said the speech’s tenor was appreciative, with the audience applauding and raising positive slogans. BNS 299 requires a “deliberate and malicious intention” to outrage religious feelings through an insult to religion or religious beliefs, it said.

Police obtained the complete official video recording and transcript from Directorate of Information and Publicity, Delhi, and examined the remarks in context. Download the TOI App.
