Child rights commission takes case over 'uninhabitable' P&T apartments

Kochi: The state commission for protection of child rights has registered a case regarding the ‘unsafe and uninhabitable‘ conditions at the P&T Apartments in Mundamveli, following a complaint about the plight of resident children.

“More than 400 people from 77 families, who were shifted from the former P&T Colony, are living in the twin-tower complex. About 65 schoolchildren live in these leaking apartments.

We want immediate rehabilitation and title deeds,” said Abhilash. The case was filed on a petition submitted by Abhilash P Parameswaran, president of P&T Association. The complaint demands the immediate relocation and rehabilitation of all resident families to safeguard the rights of the children. It also calls for strict punishment for those responsible for the residents’ dire living conditions, along with fair financial compensation for the affected children. Wastewater from toilets on the upper floors leaks into the flats below. This is the terrible situation we are facing. The P&T Apartment project, originally intended to rehouse underprivileged families living in the flood-prone P & T Colony, has been mired in allegations of corruption, structural safety compromises and procedural lapses.
