2 held for extorting Ramleela committee chairperson with AI video
Bijnor : Two men were arrested by Kotwali Dehat police on Thursday for allegedly demanding Rs 1 lakh from a Ramleela committee chairman to prevent the circulation of an AI-edited video showing an obscene dance performance, police said on Friday. The accused had allegedly collected Rs 20,000 from the chairman at Rasulpur Jagan alias Lakkhuwala intersection, while further payments were planned. Police recovered Rs 20,730 and three mobile phones from them. A case was registered under sections 299, 300, 308(5) and 351(3) of the BNS and section 67 of the Information Technology Act.
Police said Khilendra, a resident of Krito Nangli alias Peruwala village, lodged a complaint alleging that the accused and their associates threatened to circulate an objectionable video to hurt religious sentiments and force the cancellation of the Ramleela performance. They threatened to circulate the video on social media and share it with police officials if their demand was not met, police said. The accused, identified as Aman Kumar of Ratangarh village under Shivalakala police station and Shadab alias Shahadat of Tangraula village under Noorpur police station, were caught while allegedly collecting extortion money from the complainant. The video was allegedly created using artificial intelligence (AI) to edit an old recording of an obscene dance performance. During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted to planning to intimidate the committee chairman and extort money. Further legal proceedings are underway, and police are investigating the alleged involvement of other associates.
