Navi Mumbai: Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s Rs 236 crore Science Park at Nerul is expected to open partially in May 2027, after missing another deadline, city engineer Shirish Aradwad said. The project, which had earlier been scheduled for completion by March 2026, has faced unprecedented delays.
NMMC said construction of the structure at Sector 19, Nerul, had been completed. The structural work, costing Rs 109 crore, was expected to be ready by Dec 2025 but was further delayed to Oct 2026. Interiors and exhibits are projected to cost another Rs 127 crore, taking the total project cost to Rs 236 crore. Spread across 19,999 square metres, the park will have 225 exhibits and departments covering biology, environmental sciences, energy engineering and space science.
Experts said further delays could increase costs. Aradwad said officials planned to visit international facilities to select world-class exhibits for phase two. NMMC said it had consulted Indian and international scientists to develop a facility aimed at gaining international recognition and strengthening Navi Mumbai’s global identity.
Tenders for interiors were floated recently, and installation of the first phase of exhibits is expected to take another six to seven months. Officials remain uncertain about the timeline for the second phase, which will include exhibits brought from abroad. The original plan divided the project into structural construction and exhibit installation. It has now been split into three parts: the structure, partial installation of exhibits in phase one, and imported exhibits in phase two. NMMC plans to open the park after completing phase one in May next year, while no deadline has been set for phase two. Procurement efforts cover the latest models, 3D images, audio-visual films and displays on advances in science and technology. The plans include a science museum and convention centre, and the iconic archway has been structurally completed. It is intended to offer interactive exhibits, educational programmes and workshops for citizens and tourists, while promoting scientific curiosity and learning. Municipal commissioner Kailas Shinde has given the project special attention and stressed cleanliness, timely execution and planning. He called for reader-friendly scientific literature in every department and international standards for models, exhibits, audio-visual content and literature.
