Fraudsters sell fake garba passes online — Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Cybercriminals allegedly created a fake Instagram account and email address in the name of an event management company to sell counterfeit tickets for its Anant Brahmand Garba event, prompting the company to approach Cybercrime police.

The event was held on Oct 14 at a venue near Arvind Applewoods on the Rancharda-Thol Road. Online ticket sales began on Aug 19 through the website anantgarba.com. Tickets were priced between Rs 4,000 and Rs 10,000. On Oct 12, someone messaged the company’s official Instagram account and reported that another Instagram account was advertising garba passes. The person said he bought an Anant Brahmand ticket for Rs 3,100 and wanted the organisers to verify its authenticity. The seller allegedly offered a pass priced at Rs 6,000 for just Rs 2,000. The organisers then approached Cybercrime police on Oct 13 and submitted a written application.

The complaint said the fraudulent email ID used the company’s name, while the counterfeit ticket allegedly carried event-related details. The organisers had also warned customers against purchasing passes from unauthorised sellers. The customer shared a screenshot of the ticket’s QR code and a confirmation email. The organisers found the ticket fake and discovered the confirmation came from an email ID not associated with their operations. The next day, another customer contacted the organiser after receiving a WhatsApp message from an unknown person. The customer was advised not to buy it. The formal complaint alleges that unidentified persons used the company’s name and logo to sell fake tickets and collect money from unsuspecting customers. Cybercrime officers have warned people against buying event passes through unverified social media accounts or clicking suspicious links. Fraudulent links may expose users to further cyber fraud, including attempts to steal banking credentials or empty their accounts. Download the TOI App.

A complaint was filed on Friday by the manager associated with the company.
