BMW sold around 875 cars in UP last year and expects to cross the 1,000-unit mark for the first time in 2026, potentially reaching 1,100 units. Brar said BMW has been present in Lucknow since 2012 and claimed the company leads the luxury electric vehicle segment in UP. Brar said around 80% of BMW customers purchase vehicles through financing rather than outright payment. Brar said BMW’s existing Chennai facility has an annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles.

In an interview with TOI, BMW Group India president and CEO Hardeep Singh Brar said rising prosperity, improved road infrastructure and growing demand among younger buyers were driving luxury car sales in UP. “While our national growth is just 10%, here we are growing by almost 34%,” Brar said, adding that BMW’s average annual growth over the past five years exceeded 15%. UP currently has four BMW dealerships in UP — Noida, Agra, Kanpur and Lucknow, making it the only state where the company has a presence across four cities, Brar said. “We are now exploring expansion even in Varanasi,” he said, clarifying that the proposal concerns a dealership, not manufacturing. Asked whether the approaching assembly elections could boost demand, particularly among politicians who traditionally prefer large SUVs, Brar said the potential existed. “If politicians go in a BMW, they will stand out in the crowd,” he remarked, suggesting that the brand could attract attention during election campaigns. He said improved road connectivity had already transformed cities such as Lucknow and Varanasi, strengthening their potential as luxury automobile markets.

The company also sees potential for increased demand ahead of UP Assembly elections. He cited three factors: growing prosperity, improved highways and an expanding younger customer base. However, the company has no immediate plans to establish a manufacturing facility in UP. For UP to attract automobile manufacturers, he emphasised developing a strong supplier ecosystem, vendor parks, logistics infrastructure and attractive tax incentives. Download the TOI App.
