Prayagraj: The festive nights of Dussehra in Prayagraj came alive in the early hours of Saturday as tableaux by two of the city’s oldest Ramlila committees, Pattarchatti and Pajhawa, rolled out with a strong message of faith and environmental conservation. What made the tableaux distinctive was their use of natural materials, with banana leaves and stems replacing artificial decorative items.

Pattarchatti Ramlila committee presented a tableau based on Lord Vishnu’s Kalki avatar, depicting the final incarnation in the traditional sequence of the deity’s avatars. The tableau was created by artist Rajesh Chaurasia, who used banana leaves and trunks as the main material. Pajhawa Ramlila committee, meanwhile, chose the theme of seven major rivers of the country, highlighting the cultural and ecological importance of India’s rivers. The tableau was also prepared using parts of the banana plant, with herbal colours used for the artwork. The eco-friendly approach by the two committees has added a different dimension to the traditional Dussehra celebrations, where elaborate tableaux are generally made using synthetic and other artificial decorative materials. The tableaux were part of the traditional Dussehra festivities in the city, with artists and performers presenting religious themes before large gatherings of devotees and spectators.
