Muvattupuzha municipality to repurpose Urban Haat into a food street

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Kochi : As part of the Future Muvattupuzha project being implemented by Muvattupuzha municipality—with the aim of reusing long-idle municipal assets to boost revenue and channel it into public-benefit initiatives—the municipality is set to revive Urban Haat.

Built using Kudumbashree funds sanctioned in 2011 along with municipal funding, Urban Haat was inaugurated in Oct 2015. Though intended as a venue to exhibit and sell handicrafts, the facility never managed to operate effectively even for a single day. After remaining shut for years, the municipality now seeks to bring it back to life by exploring new possibilities. A team led by Regina, Kudumbashree district mission coordinator, who visited Urban Haat, noted that approval could be secured to repurpose it for other uses. The municipality has prepared a detailed project report to transform the place into an attractive food street, including works such as removing the currently sealed walls to create an entrance, expanding rooms, and renovating the open stage. By converting it into a food-and-entertainment hub that draws visitors from beyond the city, the municipality hopes to energise local commerce, create new jobs, and increase municipal revenue.
