Varanasi: Alinagar police arrested a 45-year-old man late on Saturday night after recovering 600.5 kg of suspected beef from an SUV during a vehicle-checking drive near Sindhitli bridge in Chandauli district.
During a search of the vehicle, police recovered 600.5 kg beef meat, along with two choppers.
CO (PDDU Nagar) Arun Kumar Singh said that acting on a tip-off, a team of Alinagar police began checking vehicles on the highway late at night. Police are searching for the two occupants who fled, officials said. When the cops tried to stop an SUV, its driver allegedly attempted to ram the vehicle into the police team. The SUV then hit a road divider and came to a halt. A veterinary officer was called to the spot, and samples of the meat were collected and sealed for laboratory testing.
