Pune: IIT Madras has provided 24 indigenously developed wheelchairs to Artificial Limb Centre (ALC) and Command Hospital (Southern Command) in Pune under a 100-wheelchair programme supported by a private company. With this second delivery, the total number of wheelchairs handed over under the programme has reached 49. The first batch of 25 wheelchairs was delivered to Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in June.

The deployment aims to improve mobility and independence among serving armed forces personnel, veterans and other eligible beneficiaries undergoing rehabilitation,” said an official from ALC. The YD One wheelchair was developed at IIT Madras’s TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) and is manufactured by Thryv Mobility, an IIT Madras-incubated company. “The lightweight wheelchair is designed to enable users to propel themselves independently, offering an alternative to conventional wheelchairs.
