Jalen Hurts is set to miss the rest of the season after the Eagles said Monday that blood clots in his left calf have reached his lungs. Hurts told him, “looks like you’re going to be the guy this week. “You’ll never get me making any excuse for anything,” he said.
The team diagnosed deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. The trouble began with a cleat to the calf in a loss to the Rams on Oct. Ten days later, a second ultrasound in Philadelphia showed the clot had moved. He has been placed on blood thinners. Jalen Hurts did not ask for treatment right away. Tanner McKee is next. He was the third-stringer until the Rams game, when Nick Sirianni swapped him with Andy Dalton. McKee learned the news from Hurts himself, on the way to Thursday’s walkthrough. Sirianni has refused to lean on the injuries.
He went to the training staff on Thursday, Oct.
Hurts stayed at the hospital until about 4 a.m. local time Sunday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported, and was told not to sleep. The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero put his stretch awake at roughly 36 hours before kickoff.
“I don’t want to get into the details of leading up to the [Jacksonville] game and whatnot,” Hurts said. The team said, “Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery. After Saturday’s walkthrough, the team ordered an ultrasound, and it found a superficial blood clot. Team doctors and independent specialists in London decided “activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Hours before a second ultrasound, he kept his answers about the calf vague. The Eagles sound optimistic. He is stable with no significant functional limitations and is on blood thinners. The team expects contact work to resume once he is off them.
The Eagles flew to London on Friday. He practiced fully back in Philadelphia on Wednesday. That night, doctors saw the clot had moved, and on Thursday the Eagles ruled him out against Carolina.
