Nagpur: A serial offender, Clement Eugene Pillay alias Rohit, 35, who allegedly attacked two elderly women in their eighties in Nagpur, was arrested in Wardha late Sunday after a 48-hour search involving CCTV footage, railway booking records and a painstaking probe. Clement was allegedly behind the attack on the 82-year-old mother of Raja Sharif at Ahbab Colony a week ago and the subsequent assault on Hilda Alexander, also 82, at Gaddigodam on Friday night.
Police sources said a financial dispute had developed between the two. Clement’s crimes were often directed at people he knew or against whom he held a grudge, said police. Sources said, Clement allegedly befriended women on matrimonial websites, persuaded them to take loans and lived with them as a partner for some time, before snapping contact.
His distinct walking style helped cops connect the dots as he evaded electronic surveillance by not carrying a cellphone. Police stated he would contact women on matrimonial sites, lure them with marriage promises, exploit them financially and physically before snapping ties. Police stated Clement’s arrest helped solve at least five more offences, including a jewellery shop heist and a rape case. The twin incidents led police to track his movements across Nagpur and Wardha. Investigators found that Clement knew the jeweller and visited pubs and hookah parlours with him. He allegedly attacked Sharif’s elderly mother for what he believed was an implication in a case in Madhya Pradesh. Clement reportedly claimed he wanted to eliminate Sharif, but ended up attacking his mother and fleeing with cash and jewellery. Hilda Alexander was also a distant relative, and police suspect he targeted her for robbery. Clement was also wanted in a rape case in Gittikhadan police limits. A woman who allegedly met him through a matrimonial platform subsequently lodged a complaint.
