Nagpur: The Public Works Department (PWD) plans to introduce: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Nagpur: The Public Works Department (PWD) plans to introduce ‘Lego-style’ precast concrete roads in Nagpur, beginning with a 250-metre stretch on the Mhalgi Nagar-Hudkeshwar corridor.

The road has not undergone substantial repairs in eight to 10 years. A PWD source told TOI that the work order is pending due to the model code of conduct. Underground electric cables, water pipelines, telephone lines, and traffic signal cables, etc. have further complicated repairs due to the risk of damaging essential services.

The last patchwork was carried out around seven years ago, according to the source. Officials said contractor selection is underway, with the department prioritising quality assurance before execution. Unlike conventional cement concrete roads, which require an extended curing period before being opened to traffic, precast panels are manufactured beforehand and assembled on site. The method is expected to shorten construction time and minimise traffic disruption. Precast concrete roads have been tried in rural parts of Nagpur district and on the city’s outskirts. If the trial succeeds, the technology could be extended to other stretches, particularly those carrying heavy traffic where conventional construction causes prolonged inconvenience to commuters. Work is expected to begin within a month, subject to the necessary clearances. The department plans to execute the project in phases, completing one half of the road at a time to keep traffic moving. The corridor serves several schools, colleges and hospitals. The PWD expects precast construction to ease this challenge by reducing the need for extensive excavation.
