Bill Belichick back in the NFL? Cowboys speculation adds a new twist to his coaching future (Credit: Imagn Images)
Dallas sits at 2-4, and a Monday radio segment has already linked Bill Belichick to the Cowboys job. The Packers beat Dallas 23-13 on Sunday, which dropped Brian Schottenheimer to 9-13-1 as a head coach. Belichick, let go by the Patriots after the 2023 season, owns six Super Bowl rings. Former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus raised the idea on 105.3 The Fan, pointing to Belichick’s 4-2 start at North Carolina. Belichick has 333 NFL wins as a head coach. The Patriots let him go after 2023, and he has since begun turning around a wayward North Carolina program. Schottenheimer had never been a head coach when Dallas promoted him from offensive coordinator to replace Mike McCarthy before the 2025 season.
Stephen Jones, meanwhile, said the team still backs Schottenheimer. Broaddus said, “Belichick has actually got North Carolina playing well. The Joneses have long admired him, and Dawson said Belichick matches the criteria Jerry Jones wants in a hire. Asked whether the team still stands behind Schottenheimer, he said absolutely.
Nothing suggests a change is close. For now, this is talk, not a plan. The résumé gap is the whole point. Talk of a Belichick pursuit existed back then too, but it never turned into anything real. He then wondered if that was Belichick’s road back to the NFL. The station’s Gavin Dawson called Belichick the best-case scenario for Cowboys fans if Dallas ever moved on from Schottenheimer. He did not wave away the doubts, though. Dawson worried Belichick might be outdated and brought up the strange bits he ran with his Patriots staff near the end. Then he gave the counterpoint. Belichick is getting results. Belichick’s own situation is messy too. His UNC program has dealt with scandals and resignations in his first two years, so any NFL team calling him would be weighing baggage along with the wins. And there is the matter of control. Belichick had the last word on football decisions in New England, and Jerry Jones has always kept it in Dallas. The station itself asked on X whether Belichick could work under Jones. That may be a bigger obstacle than any record.
He added that he and Jerry feel good about the coaching staff, which still has to evolve before the wins arrive. Stephen Jones gave no sign of wavering on Monday.
