PI Mitesh Trivedi of the SMC told TOI that around 6.30am he received a tip-off about liquor being unloaded near Khandubhai Desai Hall in Asarwa.

Trivedi said Thakor allegedly attempted to ram his car into the police team. The bootlegger drove recklessly, entered the wrong side of the road and even reversed his vehicle while attempting to evade the police, according to Trivedi. The bootlegger, identified as Anup Thakor alias Mepo Ratan Singh Thakor, however, managed to escape. An SMC team rushed to the spot, but Thakor allegedly fled after spotting the police. The inspector banged on the vehicle’s window, but the driver continued speeding. Trivedi then fired one round targeting the car’s tyre in an attempt to stop it. However, the accused continued to flee. Despite the chase and firing, Thakor managed to escape. The SMC team subsequently initiated the process of filing a complaint at Airport police station. Police are expected to investigate the alleged attempt to run over the inspector, the circumstances surrounding the firing and the suspected liquor consignment. Efforts are also under way to trace the absconding bootlegger.
