Ahmedabad: A woman aged 25, a student of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn), was injured after falling from a building on the institute’s Palaj campus. “We got information, not formally from the institute, that a girl aged around 25 was critical and hospitalised after she fell from a building.
As a formal complaint is yet to be lodged by the institute, police have not taken proactive action in this case concerning the premier institute,” the cop said. Chiloda police inspector S J Chauhan said police had not received any official communication about the incident. Another senior police officer in Gandhinagar said the student’s statement had not been recorded. IIT-Gn officials told TOI that the incident took place about a week ago in the academic area of the institute, and not the hostel.
Whether she attempted suicide or accidentally fell from the building is yet to be ascertained. “As soon as we got to know about the incident, the girl was hospitalised and is recuperating satisfactorily. Her parents are on the campus with her, and we are extending all possible help to the family.
On Thursday, senior police officials confirmed the incident, which occurred a week ago, but said that no formal inquiry was initiated as the institute was yet to file a formal complaint.
We request anonymity to prevent any anguish to the family,” said a senior IIT-Gn official. Meanwhile, speculation was rife on the campus about how and why the student fell from the building and whether it was an accident or a suicide attempt.
