New Delhi: In a move to ensure equal pay for equal work, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Friday increased the monthly salaries of around 4,000 multi-tasking staff (MTS) by Rs 10,000, taking their pay from Rs 18,800 to Rs 28,800.
Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the decision would cost the civic body an additional Rs 52 crore annually. The employees, who work in public health department, were initially recruited as domestic breeding checkers (DBCs) during Delhi’s 1996-97 dengue outbreak. Many of these workers have been associated with the civic body for nearly 30 years. The mayor also announced plans to engage 2,500 additional sanitation workers from next month for three months to maintain cleanliness in markets, commercial complexes and areas hosting festive celebrations, including puja ghats.
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta attended a felicitation ceremony at Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium at MCD’s Civic Centre, where the salary hike was announced. It is the govt’s responsibility to duly honour their years of struggle and contribution,” Gupta said. Wahi said MCD was working with Delhi govt to implement its initiatives on ground. We will recruit the additional staff for three months and, depending on the requirement, deploy them at various locations,” Wahi said.
The proposal received chief minister’s approval, he added. During off-season, they also assist other MCD departments, including property tax. As MCD does not have an officially sanctioned post for DBCs, they were absorbed as MTS following years of demands, making them eligible for various benefits. “Recruited during the dengue outbreak in Delhi, these staff members have played a vital role in safeguarding public health by conducting door-to-door outreach. He added that the revised salaries had been transferred directly into employees’ bank accounts at the press of a button during the event. “Delhi must look clean during Diwali. Download the TOI App.
