Starting 200-250 metres before the existing railway line on the Ranip side, the bridge will cross the tracks and descend onto the main road at Acher Depot. Sources say that for the Gandhi Ashram Development Project, AMC planned to permanently close a 500-metre stretch from Cargo Motors Road to Batrisi Bhavan. AMC issued a public notice inviting written objections between Jan 17 and Feb 17, 2024, and received six written objections. Vehicles heading towards Chandkheda or Sabarmati from Ranip or Vadaj via 132 Feet Ring Road face severe traffic slowdowns.

The depot road connects to the BRTS corridor at a four-way junction, providing direct connectivity to the road heading towards Narendra Modi Stadium. Rejecting these objections, AMC closed the road in front of Gandhi Ashram. A new road from Cargo Motors to Ranip Bus Stand was opened as an alternative route. However, following the closure of Gandhi Ashram road, traffic congestion worsened at the Ranip Bus Terminal Junction and RTO Circle. The temporary closure of Subhash Bridge has further aggravated traffic jams. Currently, the work to widen Chimanbhai Patel ROB is under way to ease this congestion.

The stretch’s width varies currently, but it will eventually be a uniform 36 metres. In its 2026-27 budget, AMC decided to conduct feasibility studies for constructing bridges at five locations. The feasibility study for the Ranip ROB recommended widening the existing road to 36 metres. A 6.5-metre-wide service road will be provided on both sides of the bridge, which will have a curved alignment. On Feb 11, 2025, roads and buildings committee approved a proposal worth Rs 267.3 crore to construct a new bridge parallel to Chimanbhai Patel Bridge along with a new flyover at Panchvati Junction. Against an estimated cost of Rs 226 crore for the two structures, AMC approved a Rs 267.3 crore tender. AMC had sanctioned a 24-metre-wide road from Prabodh Raval Bridge in Ranip to 132 Feet Ring Road to provide direct access towards Chandkheda and Sabarmati. AMC has since completed filling up the drain and finished laying a 1,200-metre-long duct line.

As a result, AMC’s project to build a new bridge adjacent to Chimanbhai Patel Bridge is under way. Traffic between RTO Circle and Chandkheda is expected to rise due to preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, the development of Sabarmati Railway Station, and the proposed transportation hub including the Bullet Train station. In 2014, the then AMC Commissioner approved filling of the Chandrabhanga drain to construct the 24-metre-wide road, but implementation was halted due to the jail land issue.
