Ahmedabad: A senior citizen from Danilimda lost Rs 3.3 lakh to cyberfraud after being lured with an offer for a “pension credit card”, police said.

On Oct 14, he received a call from an unknown mobile number. Rs 1 lakh was allegedly withdrawn through transactions linked to his credit card, while Rs 2.3 lakh was transferred from the bank account, according to the complaint. The total loss reported is Rs 3.3 lakh. He immediately disconnected the internet connection and contacted the national cybercrime helpline 1930, after which a complaint acknowledgement number was issued.

The caller introduced himself as a private bank employee and offered help with registration for the senior citizen credit card. After making an inquiry at a bank branch, he was told that a call would be made regarding the card process. Police said the caller then sent two APK files on WhatsApp, “Pension Card Download Form.apk” and “Customer Support.apk”. After the senior citizen opened the files, his mobile phone allegedly began malfunctioning and messages regarding unauthorised financial transactions started appearing. Police have registered a complaint against the unidentified caller. In the past week, at least four complaints involving similar cyberfraud cases have been filed. Download the TOI App.
