The Current officially secured their playoff place after the Portland Thorns defeated the North Carolina Courage 1-0 on Friday night, October 23. Kansas City, Utah Royals and Portland Thorns each have 47 points, placing the three clubs in the playoff picture. Kansas City will host the Washington Spirit on Sunday, October 25, in its final home match of the regular season.

Because a victory could strengthen the Current’s chances of earning a top-four seed and hosting a playoff game, the match carries extra importance. The Kansas City Current have another postseason to prepare for, giving owners Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes another reason to celebrate their investment in women’s soccer. The club has secured its third consecutive National Women’s Soccer League playoff berth, overcoming a season of major changes to remain among the league’s contenders. However, qualification is only the first step. With home-field advantage still up for grabs, Kansas City faces an important final stretch that could shape its chances of making a deep postseason run. For Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes, who are part of the Current’s ownership group, the achievement reflects the club’s continued competitiveness despite a challenging campaign.

The club also hopes to welcome 18,000 supporters for its annual fan appreciation match, potentially setting another attendance record. Strong home support has been a defining feature of Kansas City’s season, with the team remaining unbeaten across 31 consecutive home matches, an NWSL record. The team has recorded a 10-0-4 home record, compared with a 4-1-9 mark on the road. The Current have scored 50 goals this season, including 37 at home. Temwa Chawinga remains a major attacking threat, leading the team with 12 goals despite missing matches through injury and international duty.

Head coach Chris Armas has faced a demanding first season in charge of a women’s team. Roster changes and shifting availability have tested the squad, but the Current have continued to collect important results. Kansas City’s home form has helped offset its inconsistent results away from home.
