A large number of pelicans are seen at the dry Pallikaranai marshland in Chennai.
Chennai : No longer just a stopover, Pallikaranai marsh has become a year-round home for spot-billed pelicans, with hundreds of birds feeding and breeding in the wetland, according to long-term monitoring by the Nature Trust. He attributed this to the marsh’s unusual tidal rhythm. At high tide, saline water flows in from the sea, carrying fish, prawns and other marine life into the wetland. At low tide, the water drains back out through Oggiyam Maduvu. Thirunaranan believes this regular natural supply of food is one of the key reasons the birds stay year-round.
