Deputy mayor Rajendra Janjal
The alleged call was received on Oct 23 around 7 pm. Janjal (47), a resident of Nath Angan, told police he was at home when he received a call from a mobile number. The caller identified himself as Pawan Jaiswal and claimed there was a contract worth Rs 5 lakh to kill him, according to him.
Claiming the call could not be recorded directly on his iPhone, Janjal said he used another phone to capture a part of the conversation. “Of the 60-second call, I managed to record 36 seconds and handed the clip over to police,” he said. However, police said the material submitted so far does not conclusively support the extortion allegation. Pundalik Nagar police station in-charge Rajendra Mundhe said teams visited the accused man’s residence twice but did not find him. Further investigation is underway,” Mundhe said.
“The recording submitted by Janjal contains abusive language, but it does not contain any clear demand for extortion or a threat as such. Based on his complaint, Pundalik Nagar police on Saturday registered an FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to extortion, intentional insult and aggravated criminal intimidation.
