India will begin their campaign as favourites when the Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) gets underway in Punjab on Tuesday.

The semifinals and final will be held in Mohali on November 4 and 5. India beat Malaysia 5-1 in the Asian Games final, but the upcoming tournament will provide another test for Harmanpreet and his teammates. Japan gave India a tough fight in their recent Asian Games meeting before losing 0-2.

The top four teams in the league stage will qualify for the semifinals. With Pakistan absent, Malaysia are expected to pose the biggest challenge to India. The two sides have had tough battles in the past, and India cannot afford to take the Malaysians lightly. India will need to remain focused throughout the competition if they want to add another ACT title to their record. The tournament could also mark the end of the international careers of four experienced Indian players — Mandeep Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas and Nilakanta Sharma. All four were part of India’s medal-winning teams at the Olympics and Asian Games. It is reliably learnt that the ACT could be their final assignment for the country.

Korea have struggled to maintain their earlier standing in international hockey, but Japan remain capable of upsetting stronger teams.
