Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized over 36 tonnes of suspected adulterated, substandard and misbranded food products worth more than Rs 86 lakh from seven manufacturing and trading units in Hingoli, Nanded and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar districts as part of its Safe Food Safe Maharashtra campaign ahead of the festive season. Despite having more than 50 workers, there were no medical fitness records, no masks were provided and workers were found handling turmeric in vests and pants.

Open gaps at the main entrance allowed entry of birds and insects, cobwebs were found on walls and there was no pest control,” FDA authorities said. FDA joint commissioner (Food) Shrikaant Karkale said the drive against food adulterators would continue. The FDA has also suspended the food licences of the units with immediate effect. “Thick layers of turmeric were deposited on machinery, drains were filled with garbage, routine cleaning was not done.

In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city, the FDA raided a firm at Juna Mondha near Jafar Gate on October 24 and seized 2,820 litres of suspected substandard edible oil worth Rs 5,36,329 that was being stored for sale in violation of food safety norms. Samples will be tested in a laboratory.
