Mumbai: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licence of yet another iconic eatery — Kyani & Co. in Kalbadevi — and ordered its immediate closure after an inspection on Sunday found rat droppings, live flies, dead cockroaches, “a large amount of blood” in the refrigerator, and an open sewage manhole in the processing section.
The action was part of a series of inspections conducted between Sept 23 and 27, 2026, which resulted in licence suspensions, closure orders, or legal proceedings against 13 food establishments across the city.
In a press statement, FDA said, “The establishment has also been directed to immediately stop the purchase, manufacture, processing, storage, sale and distribution of food products.
Ruchi Veg Restaurant in Parel also had its licence suspended due to similar hygiene violations.
Its licence was suspended after inspectors found a faulty, mould-covered refrigerator containing live cockroaches, standing water on the kitchen floor, and raw food items “in contact with a worker’s used, sweaty jacket”. On the same day, inspectors also suspended the licence of Colaba Sweet Mart in Colaba Market after finding live lizards, larvae, flies, and cockroaches, along with dirty mop buckets kept next to uncovered food. Additionally, the inspections showed ready-to-eat food and raw dough in direct contact with printed newspapers. Prior to that, the licence of Daffodils Fast Food Inn in Vile Parle (East) was suspended after officers found staff sleeping in food storage areas, and coconuts being peeled inside a bathroom. The FDA also initiated legal proceedings against six other food business operators for hygiene violations: QSR Brands India Private Limited in Andheri East, Astra Corporation/Royal China in Fort, Tiffin restaurant in Bandra West, United Bakery & Stores in Santacruz West, Shree Padmavati Enterprises in Jogeshwari West, and Hotel Purandar Vilas in Khar West.
On Saturday, FDA also inspected the Subway outlet at Phoenix Mills in Lower Parel after a consumer complaint.
