Agra: A 32-year-old man was arrested in Mathura for allegedly strangling his 24-year-old sister to death after she embraced her lover’s religion and married him.
The accused, Akram, was held following a zero FIR by the victim, Nazia ’s husband Ravindra Kumar, police said.
A zero FIR was registered and the case was moved to Mathura’s Govind Nagar police station on Oct 23. A case was subsequently registered under BNS sections 103 (1) (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) against Akram and ‘unidentified’ persons. Their neighbours were told that she suddenly died due to electrocution.
The postmortem report confirmed that she was strangled to death.
Mathura SP (city) Rajiv Kumar Singh told TOI : “Akram buried his sister Nazia at a village graveyard. Nazia returned to her Mathura home around 10 days ago after her family assured her that “they would finally accept their interfaith union”, according to police. In his police complaint, Kumar stated that his wife went “missing” on Oct 22. Akram then confessed and led the cops to Nazia’s “grave”. Another relative, Mohammad Kaif , was arrested Monday, police said.
When her family refused to give any information about her, he approached the Pacheri Kalan police station in Rajasthan. The body was exhumed on Sunday on the orders of the city magistrate.
Akram and Nazia belonged to Mathura’s Badrinagar area. Nazia used to work at a factory in Delhi where she met Kumar, who hails from Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district. The couple married in Delhi around four months ago, despite strong opposition from Nazia’s family in UP.
Also, Akram had been named in another FIR in 2020 at Govind Nagar under IPC sections of rioting, assault, trespass and criminal intimidation.” Mathura SP added: “Since it was a case of unnatural death of a newly-married woman, a magisterial-rank official has also been deputed to probe the case…
