Rs 65cr Mahatma Nagar-Motiwala College road to be ready by March: The wider industry impact

The existing road from Mahatma Nagar to Motiwala College is to be widened and asphalted ahead of Kumbh

During the programme, deputy mayor Vilas Shinde sought the state govt’s approval for filling more than 2,500 vacant posts in the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) ahead of the Kumbh Mela. The NMC expects the parallel road to divert a significant portion of traffic from Gangapur Road, reduce congestion and travel time, and strengthen the city’s road network ahead of the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Speaking at the ceremony, Shinde said better road connectivity accelerates urban development. Nashik is undergoing major road infrastructure upgrades ahead of the Kumbh Mela, he said, adding that the projects worth crores of rupees would transform the city once completed. A civic official, while talking to TOI , said the upgraded stretch would serve as an alternative route for motorists and reduce pressure on Gangapur Road, one of the city’s busiest arterial roads. Civic officials said inadequate parking facilities, roadside encroachments and the absence of dedicated service roads at several locations have further aggravated congestion.

The deputy CM also directed the authorities to ensure that the ongoing road projects are completed within stipulated timelines and that there is no compromise on the quality of work. He warned that action would be taken against contractors found responsible for poor-quality road works. Responding to the demand, the deputy CM directed municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri to submit a proposal to the state’s urban development department and assured that steps would be taken to carry out the recruitment ahead of the mega religious congregation. Meanwhile, following approval from the NMC standing committee, the civic public works department issued the work order to the contractor concerned for widening and asphalting the Bardan Phata-Motiwala College road. The project is also expected to strengthen road connectivity in western Nashik ahead of the influx of pilgrims for the Kumbh Mela. The project is significant amid a sharp rise in vehicular movement on Gangapur Road, an arterial route linking Nashik city centre with rapidly developing residential, educational, commercial and recreational areas in western Nashik. Rapid urbanisation and growth of high-density residential pockets along the corridor have substantially increased traffic. Numerous schools, colleges, hospitals, commercial establishments, banks and restaurants on and around the road also cause frequent interruptions and slow-moving traffic, particularly during peak hours. Gangapur Road also provides connectivity to several popular tourist destinations, including Sula Vineyards, Soma Vine Village, Gangapur Dam and the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation’s boating facility in the dam backwaters. Vehicular movement on the stretch rises further during weekends and holidays. Gangapur Road has emerged as one of the city’s heavily congested corridors. Download the TOI App.

Nashik : The Rs 65-crore Mahatma Nagar–Motiwala College road project, which will provide an alternative corridor parallel to the busy Gangapur Road, is expected to be completed by March 2027 as part of Nashik’s infrastructure preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde on Monday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which involves widening and asphalting the existing 4.5km stretch. The Rs 65-crore project involves widening and upgrading the existing canal-side road between Bardan Phata and Motiwala College. The existing road, which is around nine metres wide, will be widened to 24 metres and strengthened to accommodate increased vehicular movement.

The upgraded road is expected to ease traffic on Gangapur Road and improve connectivity in western Nashik.
