Ahmedabad: A 59-year-old man, accused in a Rs 25.6 crore drug seizure case, was shot in the leg by a crime branch sub-inspector after he allegedly tried to escape during a routine medical check-up near the Sabarmati riverfront (west) on Monday. The firing took place between 4.15 pm and 4.30 pm, when Kafil Ahmed Ansari was being taken to SVP Hospital near Ellisbridge. Ansari was arrested on Oct 22 near the Ramol toll plaza on the Vadodara Expressway in a joint operation by Ahmedabad and Surat city crime branches. Police seized 4.531kg of heroin and nearly 2.5kg of mephedrone from a Delhi-registered SUV. The contraband is valued at Rs 25.6 crore in the international market.

Four officers accompanied Ansari for the medical examination; the two co-accused were not with him, police said. A senior crime branch officer said Ansari allegedly got into a scuffle with PSI A R Raval during the escape attempt, after which the officer fired one round. Raval also suffered injuries in the scuffle, police sources said. A crime branch officer said Raval’s injury was not caused by the bullet and that he was undergoing a medical examination to determine whether he had suffered a fracture.

He was arrested last week along with two other Delhi residents for allegedly transporting heroin and mephedrone to Gujarat.

Monday’s firing was the third reported incident in about 10 months involving crime branch personnel shooting an accused. On July 2, 2026, a crime branch team shot wanted suspect Mahmand Kaleem, alias Kaleem Bhaiya, in the leg near Chandola lake after he allegedly attacked joint commissioner of police Sharad Singhal with a knife. Earlier, on Dec 7, 2025, a team led by inspector Imran Ghasura shot rape accused Moinuddin Shaikh in the leg in Danilimda during crime scene reconstruction after he allegedly attacked a head constable.

The narcotics were concealed in packets of raisins and instant drink powder and were meant to be delivered to a recipient in Rajkot, according to police. Police said Ansari allegedly sourced mephedrone through a Rajasthan-based contact, while the heroin was arranged through a contact believed to be in Afghanistan. In all three cases, police said the firing followed alleged attacks or escape attempts by the accused.

The three accused had allegedly been under surveillance as part of an investigation into the network. Download the TOI App.
