Ahmedabad : St Xavier’s College, Navrangpura, has been granted a 10-year extension of its autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC), allowing it to retain autonomy until the academic year 2035-36. The extension, approved at a UGC meeting on July 6, 2026, will take effect from the 2026-27 academic year.

Affiliated with Gujarat University , St Xavier’s College became the first college in Gujarat to receive autonomous status in 2014. Following an application submitted last year, the UGC approved the extension based on the recommendation of its standing committee on autonomous colleges under the UGC Regulations, 2023. The extension letter, dated Aug 31, 2026, was sent to the principal secretary to the governor, the higher education department of Gujarat govt, the registrar of Gujarat University and the college principal. The university has been directed to issue the required notification within 30 days.

Autonomous status gives the college greater flexibility in curriculum design, academic planning, administration, and examination processes. The autonomy has enabled the institution to introduce new programmes and update courses in line with evolving student and industry needs.
