How a voter roll error triggered a row and forced UP CEO's office to apologise — 'Ram ne Yadav ko

The Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Uttar Pradesh has come under fire for a social media gaffe involving an electoral roll error

The controversy began after a voter slip showing Ravi Sharma’s father’s name as “Ram ne Sharma ko mara” (Ram hit Sharma) surfaced on social media. The office said it had taken note of the genuine anger expressed in the comments and sincerely apologised to those who felt offended or upset. LUCKNOW: The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Uttar Pradesh , has issued a public apology for inappropriate remarks made through its official X handle while responding to a bizarre entry in the electoral roll for the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates’ constituency of the UP Legislative Council. Acknowledging the error, the CEO’s office initially posted that computers and software were not casteist and that mistakes made by its office did not involve caste discrimination. The post further remarked that it was fortunate Lord Ram had not killed someone from a minority community; otherwise, he would have been labelled both casteist and communal. The remarks drew criticism, with Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh questioning why Ram had been mentioned instead of other names. He also asked whether the CEO’s computer was casteist or whether the office was pursuing a political agenda.

Following the criticism, the CEO’s office issued an apology, acknowledging that the language, tone and sharp nature of its earlier remarks were inappropriate for an official communication channel.
