The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta Tuesday announced plans to install one lakh smart streetlights and 50,000 CCTV cameras across Delhi to improve women’s safety. The announcement was made while she inaugurated Centenary Academic Building, Computer Centre and Skill Development Centre at Daulat Ram College, her alma mater.

She also launched the ‘Miss DRC Talent Hunt’, encouraging students to showcase their abilities. Addressing students, Gupta urged them to pursue their ambitions without fear and said Delhi govt was committed to ensuring their safety while expanding opportunities for education and skill development. “Every girl in Delhi should move forward fearlessly; Delhi Govt stands with her to protect her safety and support her dreams,” Gupta said. The CM said the smart streetlights would be linked to a command and control centre, enabling authorities to identify faulty lights and ensure timely repairs. Gupta said the responsibility for women’s safety should not rest solely on women and stressed the need for a change in societal attitudes. Instead of imposing restrictions on girls, society should teach boys and men to respect women, she said. Recalling her days at Daulat Ram College, Gupta said her journey in public life began through student politics when she became general secretary of the college students’ union. The experience, she said, helped her understand people’s concerns and motivated her to work towards resolving them.

The system is expected to help eliminate dark spots in public spaces across the city. The chief minister also stressed that education should extend beyond academic qualifications, with technical knowledge and practical skills playing a key role in making young people self-reliant. She encouraged students to trust their abilities, take independent decisions and face challenges with confidence. Download the TOI App.
