The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed authorities to remove encroachments from a pond in south-west Delhi’s Kanganheri village and restore it to its original size and shape.

The order follows the tribunal’s July 27 observations that a permanent boundary wall could obstruct the flow of rainwater and surface runoff from the catchment area into the pond. During the hearing, officials from the revenue department presented the original demarcation map, which identified the pond area and separately marked the encroached portions. The applicant accepted that the pond’s area had been correctly depicted in the map. NGT directed the authorities concerned to take appropriate steps to remove encroachments in accordance with law, protect the remaining pond area from further encroachment and restore the water body to its original dimensions. Any additional land freed from encroachments must also be incorporated into the restoration. Authorities were consequently asked to examine bio-fencing and plantation of suitable shrubs and trees around the remaining pond area. Download the TOI App.

The directions were issued by the principal bench, which passed the order on Oct 13 following proceedings seeking implementation of the tribunal’s Sept 23, 2024 directions for restoration of the water body.
