Cyberabad’s maintenance bills poised to rise The water crisis is: The wider industry impact

The region recorded over 3.7 lakh bookings between July 1 and Oct 26 Cyberabad has accounted for a substantial share of tanker demand.

Hyderabad: With groundwater levels across Hyderabad plunging and municipal supplies falling short of household demand, residents’ spending on water tankers is projected to cross Rs 100 crore in the coming months. Already, households grappling with rising inflation and living costs have spent over Rs 40 crore on water tankers during the monsoon months of June to Sept, according to data from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). A total of 8.4 lakh tankers were booked during this period — two to three times the number recorded in other years. With demand expected to rise further amid depleting water reserves, the monthly expenditure on tankers could climb by Rs 10 crore to Rs 20 crore after Dec, experts estimate. Over the past week, residents have been booking 7,000 to 7,500 tankers a day, indicating intensifying water stress even after the monsoon. The region recorded over 3.7 lakh bookings between July 1 and Oct 26. Maintenance costs will increase by around 50 paise per square foot to cover water tanker expenses, according to the Federation of Gated Communities Cyberabad (FGCC). “For many residents, this could translate into an additional Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 a month. In previous years, the region required fewer than 500 tankers during winter, but the current demand has climbed to nearly 3,000 tankers,” said Sai Ravi Shankar, president of FGCC. HMWSSB plans to add 500 tankers With pending bookings mounting in high-demand areas, the HMWSSB is stepping up tanker deployment to clear the backlog. The board is deploying 50 additional tankers, with a particular focus on pending bookings in Boduppal.

The projection is based on current daily booking trends. The situation could worsen after Dec if water levels in the Singur and Manjeera reservoirs decline as anticipated. Meanwhile, Cyberabad has accounted for a substantial share of tanker demand. Cyberabad’s maintenance bills set to rise The water crisis is also beginning to hit residents of gated communities, where rising tanker procurement costs are expected to push up monthly maintenance charges from December. The scale of the change is particularly stark in Cyberabad, where the demand for tankers has surged even during the winter season.

“We have initiated the process of registering another 500 tankers, over and above the 1,200 tankers currently available, to improve supply and meet the growing demand. Private operators charge between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000 per tanker, depending on factors such as location, capacity and availability. “Private water tanker charges have surged across several parts of Cyberabad, with prices climbing to Rs 4,000 per tanker and threatening to touch Rs 5,000 in a few weeks. This would push monthly maintenance expenses higher, with every household potentially facing bills exceeding Rs 5,000 a month,” said Ramana Eshwaragiri, president of United Federation of Residents Welfare Associations (UFERWAs)-Cyberabad. GFX (Cyberabad region): 1.39 lakh bookings in July, followed by 95,446 in August and 84,363 in September. Between October 1 and 26, bookings stood at 88,636.) In comparison, GHMC and MMC recorded over 2 lakh and 90,000 tankers respectively during July – Oct 26.

However, the additional fleet is aimed at easing the immediate pressure on tanker deliveries,” an HMWSSB official said. Private tankers add to the burden For households unable to secure sufficient municipal water, private tankers are another costly option. For families and apartment communities that need repeated deliveries, these expenses add substantially to routine water charges. With gated communities requiring substantial volumes of water to meet daily demand, many have little choice but to depend on private suppliers, further inflating their water bills.
