Varanasi: Banaras Hindu University and Australia’s Griffith University formalised a research collaboration aimed at advancing the study of human evolution and origins, signed by BHU registrar, Rajan Srivastava and Lynette Farquhar, deputy director of research services, Griffith University.
The ARC Centre has received an $85 million grant from the Australian Research Council for a seven-year period. BHU will participate in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Transforming Human Origins Research, led by Prof Michael Petraglia of Griffith University while Prof Gyaneshwer Chaubey of BHU department of zoology is partner investigator. The work will focus on generating, analysing and interpreting scientific data, with emphasis on Global South. The initiative seeks to address long-standing biases in human evolution research and support the development of new research methodologies. It is among the world’s largest research initiatives in the field of human origins and development studies. A key component of the collaboration will be creation of an ethical research data repository, a central database intended to support research on human origins and community use. A separate database agreement will be developed to define how partner institutions, including BHU, will contribute, access, and use data. Management and ownership of indigenous data collected during the research will remain with the respective indigenous communities. Any intellectual property generated during specific research projects will be owned by the institutions involved in those projects. BHU and other partner institutions will receive a worldwide, royalty-free license to use the new intellectual property for education, teaching, and further research.
