Madurai : Furious residents across Madurai have raised repeated complaints against a crippling absence of garbage collection, pointing squarely at the private contractor entrusted with the city’s waste management. Several residential areas in Sellur, near Villapuram, Mattuthavani and Arrapalayam bus stands have been left grappling with mounting heaps of refuse as daily clearance operations have come to a complete standstill. Locals note that waste is spilling onto roads and blocking drainage systems, turning critical urban sectors into severe public health hazards.
“The severe waste accumulation acts against the corporation’s work to clear roads and water channel blockages as part of their monsoon preparation works,” said Rajkumar, a member of the residents’ welfare association in Ponnagaram. “It’s impossible to bear the smell while waiting to pick up our children from school,” said Gowri, a parent concerned about how the children were able to study for a whole day with such a smell. Evening and overnight rains recorded over the past few days have severely waterlogged streets and impeded regular dumper bin clearance vehicles, leading to temporary interruptions in the city’s waste collection schedule, according to a corporation official.
He added that the rain is making the garbage situation worse as it causes waste to rot. The waste also attracts stray cattle and dogs that further spread the waste across the area. In Kalavasal, several dumper bins behind Germanus hotel were found overflowing with waste owing to the lack of collection. The waste causes a foul stench affecting a nearby school. However, Madurai corporation officials defended the current operational delays by pointing to recent adverse weather conditions.
