Agra : A man with 53 criminal cases against him and a Rs 1 lakh bounty was killed in a police encounter in Etah, days after his release from jail. His accomplice escaped under cover of darkness, while a police officer was injured in the exchange of fire.

Investigators also found that Virendra had stolen a motorcycle in Unnao on Oct 21.

The injured police officer was undergoing treatment, officials said. Police said Virendra, a resident of Harchandpur village in Mainpuri district, had criminal cases registered against him in Mainpuri, Etawah, Agra and Firozabad. Police said the same motorcycle was used in the Aliganj robbery the following day.

He attempted to flee and opened fire at the police team, prompting retaliatory firing in which he sustained a gunshot injury. Police took him to the emergency department of a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His record included cases of robbery, dacoity, murder and offences under the Gangsters Act.

Police said the encounter took place on Tuesday near Sunna canal under Pilua police station limits when a team comprising SWAT and surveillance personnel tried to stop Virendra during a checking operation.
