Lucknow: An 18-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend at her home in Belwa Sudama village in Kushinagar district early Wednesday after she refused to elope with him and her family fixed her marriage elsewhere, police said.
The accused, Surjeet (20), allegedly entered the house around 12.30am and went to the second floor where the woman, Roshni alias Rukhsana, was in her room.
Police said he locked the door from inside and attacked her with a knife, inflicting multiple injuries to her neck, killing her on the spot. The family said he then shut the door and attacked her. Recounting the incident, Razina Khatoon alleged Surjeet entered their house and an argument broke out and Roshni shouted for help, saying Surjeet had come to kill her. Hearing the commotion, family members and villagers rushed upstairs and broke open the locked door, finding Roshni in a pool of blood. Villagers chased Surjeet as he tried to flee and caught him, after which he was beaten before being handed to police.
She had studied up to Class 12 and discontinued her education about two years ago.
The two had been in a relationship for three years, but the family opposed it as they belonged to different religions, according to the victim’s family. Surjeet, a resident of neighbouring Jhanga Bazaar village, worked as a painter in Mumbai and had returned to the village about a month ago, the family said. After the family arranged Roshni’s marriage to another man, she reduced contact with Surjeet, which allegedly angered him. The family alleged he had been pressuring her to elope. Roshni was the youngest of three children of Alham Ansari and Razina Khatoon.
