Clash in Bengaluru after activists target shed over suspected Bangladeshi nationals; 23 held

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Bengaluru: A confrontation broke out near the IFIM hostel in Hulimangala village, near Electronics City, Wednesday after members of a pro-Hindu outfit barged into a makeshift shed housing people from West Bengal, suspecting them to be illegal Bangladeshi nationals.

The incident led to a clash between the two groups, following which police registered two cases and arrested four members of the outfit and 19 labourers from the shed. Police arrested Nagendappa, a medical professional, Amit Saudi (30), Sannidhi S Shetty (33), an interior designer, and C Rajat Pratap Roy (64). The cops also arrested 19 labourers staying in the shed for allegedly assaulting members of the outfit.

Members of Rashtra Rakshana Pade entered the shed forcibly while attempting to identify suspected illegal immigrants, according to cops. A source said a case and a counter-case were registered against members of both groups. He said people should report any suspicious individuals or suspected illegal activities to police instead of confronting people directly.

The members of the outfit, including Nagendappa T and others, trespassed and assaulted a local resident, Hajuil Shaik. Issuing a stern message against taking the law into one’s own hands, DCP (Electronics City) M Narayana cautioned that forcibly entering premises or assaulting anyone on the suspicion of being an illegal immigrant is a criminal offence.
