Bareilly: A 35-year-old man has alleged that a local police chowki in-charge and several other personnel illegally confined him for three days and coerced him into selling a plot valued at Rs 2 crore for just Rs 10 lakh. Seeking an impartial probe amid fears of being framed in false cases, the victim confirmed to TOI that he has petitioned the Uttar Pradesh chief minister and the DGP for justice.
In his complaint, Imtiyaz Hussain, a resident of Shahdana Kot in the old city, alleged that Station chowki in-charge Vaibhav Gupta, along with five to six policemen, arrived at his house around midnight on Sept 19 under Kotwali police station limits. On Sept 21, Hussain claimed he was taken to the registrar’s office accompanied by Atir Ali, his brother Zubair, and several plainclothes policemen. The property was subsequently registered in the name of Shahvez, son of Aleem, and Rs 10 lakh was transferred to Hussain’s bank account via RTGS. Hussain alleged that Atir Ali and Zubair extorted an additional Rs 5 lakh from his family under the pretext of saving him from police action—a sum his family was forced to borrow from friends and relatives.
He claimed he was also threatened with death if he reported the matter. Hussain claimed he was taken away and locked in a room behind the Biharipur chowki, where policemen kept strict watch over him and refused to let him leave. He alleged that he was threatened with being shot if he attempted to flee, adding that he overheard Gupta telling senior officers on the phone that “the plan was final. TOI attempted to reach SSP Bareilly for a statement, but he was unavailable for comment. The allegations remain to be verified, and the police version of the incident could not be immediately obtained.
