DMRC extends real-time occupancy status display to Pink Line

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: After successfully implementing real-time occupancy information on the Magenta Line, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has extended the display of coach-wise occupancy status for arriving trains to Pink Line stations (from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar/Maujpur-Babarpur).

The Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) on Magenta Line platforms (from Botanical Garden to Janakpuri West) has been showing real-time occupancy levels of individual coaches since 2022. This display helps passengers identify less crowded coaches in advance and move towards them on the platform, reducing the need to stand in densely packed coaches.

Implementing this system on Pink Line was challenging, as it is a circular line,” said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director, corporate communications, DMRC. The move can enhance the travel experience during peak hours, when certain coaches tend to fill up faster than others,” said Dayal. Encouraged by the positive response, DMRC has now operationalised the same feature on Pink Line. The system uses load sensors fitted in the coaches to measure the current weight of each coach and compare it with the empty weight. “It encourages more balanced occupancy across coaches, improving overall comfort and reducing local overcrowding. The occupancy data of coaches can improve safety and efficiency as it will help in even weight distribution across the train, contributing to smoother operations and better utilisation of available capacity. It is time-saving and reduces stress as commuters no longer need to guess or walk the full length of the platform after the train has arrived to find space. Download the TOI App.

“Based on this data, the approximate passenger load percentage of each coach (displayed as C1 to C6) is calculated and shown on the platform PIDS screens shortly before the train arrives.
